As parents, our primary goal is to ensure our kids grow up happy and healthy. And we mean the complete package: body, mind, and soul. So, where do we start? Syempre, their bedrooms! Not all of us might have had the luxury of having our own rooms growing up, but there’s no reason na ipagkakait natin sa ating kids kung abot-kaya. Plus, it’s another opportunity to decorate your home — and we, at Home Buddies, all love that, don’t we? (Wink wink.)

Designing a bedroom for your bulilit isn’t a walk in the park. It will put your decorating skills to the test because this task goes beyond selecting colors or furniture. But don’t worry — papunta pa lang tayo sa exciting part! Here are some design hacks in building your kid’s dream space para feel na feel ang fairytale fantasy — tried and tested by our Kapitbahays.

Put the ‘Fun’ in ‘Functional’

In your kid’s bedroom, every fixture counts. After all, we can’t put anything that poses a choking hazard, especially if we’re dealing with a super makulit and malikot na toddler. But that doesn’t mean you should let the safety precautions overshadow the fun! Look for furniture that serves dual purposes: a storage box the kids can use as a desk, or a bed that can also function as storage.

You can even build modular shelves and units that not only look nice, but can also be rearranged and customized to accommodate their interests as they grow. Kapitbahay David Donald Chu’s setup is a great example. Can you turn a child’s room into a Nordic wonderland? With the right tools, kering keri ‘yan.

Makulay ang Buhay!

We all know that colors can make or break things, and a well-thought-out palette is a great starting point in decorating projects. For your kid’s room, the theme should always revolve around fun. While the interior should be bagay with the rest of your home, your children’s bedrooms should always be more masigla than other rooms in the household.

This might be a good time to remember some color psychology pointers. Brighter hues like reds and yellows can elicit excitement and more positive emotions. But if it’s too matingkad, try mint green, baby blue, or pastel pink. You can even use them as accent colors if painting a wall is too much for your taste.

Wall Art A La Fairy Tale

While many of us are Team #Minimalism on a good day, the same can’t be said when it comes to our children. More colors and more kasiyahan can make them more imaginative and creative. And we, of all people, know that it’s important for a growing child to foster their creativity! (Malay mo, one day, maging Kapitbahay at fellow home enthusiasts ang mga ‘yan.)

Wall art can be different things, which is why it’s so exciting. For example, you can paint a mural, and if you want it to be more bongga you can even commission an artist for it. Pwede rin to let your kid do it themselves! If this is too daunting a challenge, you can just add decals and stickers; bonus points if they’re cute and educational.

Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Lights

A child’s bedroom is where you really get to play around more — and that goes for the lighting, too. Get creative with glow-in-the-dark decals, starry projector lamps, and other wacky options. You can even add adorable night lamps for more character.

This is also what we mean when we say put the “fun” in “functional.” Obviously, lighting plays an important role in any room. But more than that, if you’re up for some diskarte, it also lets you have more fun. This holds true especially in a kiddie room because where else can we put a hanging planet as a light fixture, right?

Organize All Over

The sooner you think of organizing as less of a chore, the more enjoyable it can become. Because whether we like it or not, it’s required in our children’s bedrooms. Sa dami-dami ba naman ng mga kalat, why wouldn’t you clean up? Not only will it make the room neater, but it’s also safer for the chikitings.

Take a page out of Kapitbahay April Matic’s book. Team Puti + Team Kahoy + kid’s room in one sentence? Achieve na achieve! This gender-neutral setup works like a charm — and it’s a sight for sore eyes in a typically cluttered place. Just make sure to devote some time daily for maintenance para hindi masyadong mahirapan on decluttering days.

Sulitin Ang Space

No corner of a kiddie bedroom will go unused — ask any parent of a growing kid. Mapa-play station man ‘yan or a study desk, we know our children savor every bit of their space. Make sure to use fixtures that are not only stunning but are also helpful as our kids adapt and grow.

Here’s a demo from Kapitbahay Lorelin Feliciano Sia. This is a challenge because it’s a bedroom for twins, which automatically means double everything, right? Not quite! See how the bed-for-two also doubles as a storage. She strategically placed a nightstand, study table, and some dressers in a limited space. But it’s still spacious and, more importantly, oh-so-charming.

Make Them Personal

You know your kids better than anyone else. And what better way for us to show how much we love our children than by decorating their space according to their hobbies and interests? Think about their favorite animals and characters, and find a way to incorporate those in their bedroom.

Remember, this is the place your kid will grow up in. Fill it with their fondest memories and all the good things that remind them of who they are as they grow up. After all, home is where the heart is. Someday, when they think of “home,” they’ll think of the place you so thoughtfully made for them.
